I bet that calculators were not common at universities in 1974, but by 1984 everyone had them.  They were expensive enough, however, that they were likely to get stolen if you didn&#039;t pay really close attention.

By 1994, they were cheap enough that students would casually leave them lying unguarded at their table in the library while they went to the bathroom.

In 1984, I owned a typewriter, and I think a lot of (but not all) students did.  In 1994, my office partner had never used a typewriter.</description>
